How to build your audience on Pinterest

You’ve learned to check your follower count. Maybe even obsessively. But metrics don’t tell the full story: Your follower quality matters, too.

On Pinterest, you get more than a passive follow. Here, you can build an active community that values and engages with your content. But how do you do it? Follow these five tips to help grow your audience on Pinterest.

1. Create fresh content weekly

The more you create, the more chances you’ll have to get discovered. Aim to create fresh Idea Pins every week to engage your current audience and maximize your potential to reach new people.

2. Use trends to inform your strategy

Stay up to date on the latest Pinterest trends so you create relevant content for a large audience. You can use our trends tool to gauge the potential reach for different topics you might want to post about. Just type in a keyword, and you’ll see how many people have searched for it over time. That data can help you decide where to focus your content.

3. Add text overlay to your Pins

The text overlay on your Idea Pins affects how they show up in Pinterest search. It’s like SEO on Pinterest: If you pick the right keywords, you’ll reach more people.

To find the right keywords, you can use the Pinterest Trends tool. Or, search for your topic on Pinterest and see what suggested keywords pop up.

4. Topic tag before you publish

With Idea Pins and video Pins you can tag your content with relevant topics right before hitting publish. Always do this! Tagging a mix of topics related to your content helps your idea reach the people who are interested in what you’re creating.

5. Fill in all of your board details

Boards are where you save Idea Pins after creating them. You can organize them however you like—just make sure to fill out the detail fields, every time. Board names, descriptions and categories all impact how your content shows up in Pinterest search results. Use clear, descriptive language to improve your search performance.

Building relationships with your audience is an ongoing process. Be authentic and approachable and they’ll show you their love in return. And on Pinterest, you get more chances to reach people than you do on other platforms. Content remains discoverable—it doesn’t disappear after 24 hours. Because people find content by interests, and not a chronological feed, more people will keep finding your Idea Pins for months to come.
