A Hollywood producer once gave Jacob some pivotal advice over drinks in a hotel bar. “He said, ‘Look, your job is to make sure everyone knows that you’ve got it. You can do this,’” Jacob recalled.
As a commercial director and photographer who runs his own production company, Jacob took this advice to heart. Even if he’s incredibly intimidated by the job ahead, he knows it’s important to project an aura of self-assuredness. One way he does so is with his clothing.
“To me, style has so much to do with that,” he said. “It gives me confidence.”
And the place Jacob goes to for personal style inspiration is Pinterest.
Once when Jacob was in the market for a new jacket, he noticed that Barbour brand jackets were especially popular on the streets of Portland, where he lives.
“I wanted a Barbour jacket, but I didn’t want the exact same one that everybody was getting,” he said.
While researching jackets on Pinterest, Jacob ended up saving a jacket to his board that was different than the traditional Barbour style. It was made of their trademark waxed cotton, but it had leather details near the collar and was a bit more formal, like a blazer.
In short, it was exactly what Jacob was looking for.
“I kept trying to figure out, ‘How am I going to get my hands on this?’” he said.
“Pinterest is super useful for me because I’ll Pin stuff that I like and then it sits there as a real inspiration.”
When the coveted jacket finally went on sale, Jacob snapped it up. He’s been wearing it and projecting confidence in it ever since.
“Style is a funny thing,” he said. “People have a lot of different feelings tied up in it. The way I look at it is that no matter if you’re pulling yourself together in a specific way or not, you’re making a statement to the world.”
